FESTIVAL-GOERS and football fans are urged to plan ahead and make more time for their journeys because of weekend roadworks on the A19

Herrington Country Park is hosting the Let’s Rock The North East festival and Sunderland AFC are at home to Wimbledon, at the Stadium of Light, both on Saturday.

National Highways, which is responsible for the dual carriageway, is carrying out major weekend works, which began on Friday evening and run until 6am on Monday.

It will enable ongoing junction improvements to be carried out at Downhill Lane, north of the Nissan site, and will involve partial and full closures of the A19 north of the A1231 Wessington Way junction to the Testo’s junction in South Tyneside.

Drivers should note there will be a full closure of the A19 northbound between Hylton and Downhill, and southbound between Testo’s and Hylton.

The A184 westbound lane will also be closed between BMW garage and Testo’s.

Diversions will be in place following the A1231 and A195 Northumberland Way.

Drivers are asked to plan ahead for their journey and follow the signed diversions in place.
