RESIDENTS in Darlington have been warned about a possible scam following a fire at Bilsdale TV mast.

The fire, which broke out on Tuesday, left up to a million people without TV and radio signal.

Darlington Borough Council said it had received reports of a man knocking on doors claiming he had been sent by the authority to fit a new aerial - for £245.

He is reported to have told tenants they would get TV reception if they paid for a new aerial.

The council said: "Please be aware that Darlington Borough Council has not instructed anybody to visit our properties and offer to fit new aerials.

"Always ask for identification, be wary of scams, and if unsure ring us directly for advice."

Work is underway to restore services to homes in the region.

Site operator Arqiva said yesterday it is in the process of gradually restoring services using a combinations of temporary structures and existing infrastructure elsewhere in the region.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is expected to start when it is confirmed that the structure is secure.

When those investigations take place, officers will determine whether the fire was the result of criminal activity or not.
