A POPULAR hairdresser and businesswoman who died earlier this year has been honoured with a legacy of donations that will benefit a range of charities.

Janet Maitland, 63, managing director and salon group owner of Janet Maitland Hair Excellence, was described as a true philanthropist, who helped to raise money for a number of causes she held dear, including Stray Aid, SOS Villages and The Hairdressers’ Charity (formerly HABB).

In the seven months since Janet died, a throng of family, friends, clients, colleagues contributed to a fund that has reached £5,000.

Janet’s legacy is benefitting local, national and international charitable organisations in support of people and pets.

Among the beneficiaries is Stray Aid where Janet and her husband Peter McDermott adopted their dog Molly who quickly became a huge part of their lives and is a now a companion for Peter.

Two national charities, The Hairdressers’ Charity and Marie Curie are also beneficiaries of the fund.

Hairdressers’ Charity head, Jean Kelly said: “This help to make a huge difference to support colleagues in the industry who are financially struggling or in crisis, and we are so grateful to Janet and her amazing for this donation.”

Janet was invited to be a part of the Schwarzkopf Professional Shaping Futures initiative, for which she worked tirelessly as the UK Ambassador from 2012 to 2019.

Shaping Futures teaches hairdressing skills to disadvantaged children with the goal of helping them to get a job at the end of the programme.

Janet led teams in India, Jordan and the Philippines and was dedicated to ensuring that each of the young people she helped to educate was rewarded with a job.

Her entrepreneurial spirit and business acumen were recognised when she was given the Inspire Me Award at the Women into the Network North East Business Woman of the Year awards, followed by the Business Director of the Year at HJ’s British Hairdressing Business Awards.

Peter said: “We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their wonderful generosity and kindness. We are thrilled that the money is able to go to such worthy causes, Janet would be so pleased.

“We would like to send a huge heartfelt thank you for everyone’s continued support, kindness and love over what has been a very difficult time.”
