OFFERING a wide range of cuisine, North Yorkshire is a treasure trove for food adventurers, but which are the best restaurants in the region?

From restaurants to cafes this list contains a mix of places to eat for those looking for a quick bite, or those who want a whole new food experience.

Price range is also varied with some places costing as little as £4 to snack and others costing as much as £135 for people who are more serious about what goes into their tummies.

From pubs in Cayton to American street-food in Filey, these businesses have seen some of the highest ratings across the board and are sure to please anyone who visits.

The following list contains ten places to eat across North Yorkshire in order of how they are listed on the TripAdvisor:

  1. Lifeboat Fish Bar, Eastborough, Scarborough

This fish and chippy has secured itself a TripAdvisor 2021 Travellers’ Choice award and it’s no surprise having received 505 “excellent” five-star reviews out of a total of 564 reviews.

Describing itself as a café, seafood and fast food restaurant, the chippy also offers gluten free options.

One person said: “There are many fish & chip restaurants and takeaways throughout Scarborough that claim they are the best. You can be sure that their self-proclaimed declarations of greatness will be plastered over their walls and pasted in their windows for all to see.

“Tucked just behind the main street, there is a takeaway with no hubristic slogans in its window; only menus are to be found on its walls. A place where the food speaks for itself, and where you can genuinely find the best fish and chips in Scarborough.”

  1. The Wensleydale Heifer Restaurant, Main Street, Leyburn

On the more fine-dining side of things, The Wensleydale Heifer Restaurant has also secured itself a TripAdvisor 2021 Travellers’ Choice Award and describes itself as a “traditional white-washed inn complete with leaded lights and swinging signs.”

The description provided on TripAdvisor goes on to say that the restaurant gives “the visitor a real flavour of Britain.”

Serving vegetarian friendly meals, vegan options and gluten free options, the venue is sure to satisfy anyone’s needs.

With 1,727 “excellent” five-star reviews out of a total of 2,114 reviews all together, the Wensleydale Heifer is a must visit if you’re ever in the area.

One person said: “We recently ate at The Wensleydale Heifer and the food was amazing, we started with squid & fish pakora, then half a lobster and a steak. All cooked to perfection and were delicious.

“Very pleasant staff and service was at a lovely pace, not rushed. Sadly didn’t have room for a dessert. You need to book in good time as it is a very popular restaurant.”

  1. The Hare, Restaurant with Rooms, Scawton Village, Helmsley

A little gem hidden away, The Hare, Restaurant with Rooms, provides a high dining experience that has pleased many visitors, securing itself a TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Award.

Although prices can range from £85 to £135 per person, the reviews speak for themselves as the venue has received 426 “excellent” five-star reviews out of a total of 460 reviews all together.

One person said: “At last we were able to go and enjoy a wonderful dinner and overnight stay at this charming restaurant.

“We felt completely safe during our stay with COVID restrictions adhered to rigorously, but in a way that didn’t spoil the experience.

“This is cooking at top level, with each course well thought out with delicious combinations of flavours.

“Each course explained but without all the pomp of some other places Beautiful room and up to date bathroom we will return perhaps in the wintertime.”

  1. Brandysnap Bistro, Whitbygate, Thornton-Le-Dale

Offering a range of options including vegetarian, gluten free and vegan options, this little bistro has received many “excellent” reviews.

221 of the reviews were five-star out of a total of 234 reviews all together, an excellent track record to say the least.

One person said: “Literally just returned from Brandysnap bistro now and wish I’d tried it years ago.

“Adam, Clair and team are wonderful and the food is amazing. We live locally and up until this evening we had a very firm favourite, note the use of the word ‘had’.

“Can’t wait to revisit in future and can’t recommend highly enough.”

  1. Tommy’s, Hope Street, Filey

This restaurant is one for the American cuisine lovers out there, offering American, Cajun and Creole and streetfood options.

Tommy’s is another venue on our list that has secured itself a TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Award.

 Offering great food at a fair price of between £1 to £14 and a range of Covid-safe measures such as hand sanitiser and tables being regularly cleaned, this is another eatery hard to pass up.

The business has received 119 “excellent” five-star reviews out of a total of 122 reviews.

One person said: “We have visited Filey loads of times over the years but have only recently discovered Tommy’s.

“The family thoroughly enjoyed the visit. Kids loved the Mac & Cheese, including the Mac Daddy Burger, whilst the New Orleans Red Snapper, Louisiana Kebab and Alabama Pork were all excellent.

“The hostess was really friendly and great with the kids. I missed out on the moonshine but will definitely try next visit.”

  1. Essenza Bar and Restaurant, Oxford Street, Harrogate 

Another TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Award recipient, Essenza Bar and Restaurant offers Mediterranean, European, Eastern European and Spanish cuisine to guests.

Also having a range of Covid-safe measures, the restaurant has received 292 “excellent” five-star reviews out of a total of 314 reviews.

One person said: “Visited on a Sunday night with family for a late evening meal. The restaurant is only small and was full but not overly so or noisy. The staff were lovely and the food was delicious and well presented. Very reasonable priced for the quality. Lovely find in such a busy town, we will return for sure.”

  1. Dog and Gun, Knayton, Thirsk

The Northern Echo:

Describing itself as a “warm welcoming village pub set in the small village of Knayton near Thirsk” the Dog and Gun is a much loved place to eat in North Yorkshire.

The venue prides itself on home made traditional pub food and is another place to receive a TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Award.

Featuring outdoor seating, parking, highchair availability, wheelchair access and an extensive specials board, it’s no wonder the pub has received 608 “excellent” five-star reviews out of 669 reviews.

One person said: “Fabulous food; tasty, well presented. Staff very friendly, kept us updated at all times, especially as larger party in at same time as us, very efficient service all round.

“Very pet friendly, table near us brought their dog with them who was treated to their own food & water. Lovely location, very welcoming.”

  1. The Lighthouse Tea Room, Belle Vue Street, Filey

The Northern Echo:

This café offers a range of dietary options and is the perfect place for a cosy chat on a rainy afternoon.

Offering breakfast, lunch and brunch options, this café has also, unsurprisingly, received a TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Award.

With 507 “excellent” five-star reviews out of a total of 591 reviews, it’s a sure-stop for any tea-lovers out there.

One person said: “Came with friends on our day out to Filey. Small but nice selection of sandwiches and teas.

“Staff were friendly and attentive. Great location too. Alongside the beautiful weather, what more can you want?”

The owner of the Lighthouse and Tea Room has responded to most of the reviews on Trip Advisor, which is another great sign.

  1. The Farrier, Main Street, Scarborough

A gastropub with a range of Covid-safe measures and dietary options, this venue is a well-rated stop for those looking for a bite to eat in a pub in Scarborough.

The Farrier is another recipient of TripAdvisor’s Travellers’ Choice Award and has received 418 “excellent” five-star reviews out of 479 reviews all together.

One person said: “Me and the wife went today, (2nd August) and both had a really great meal. I had the pork belly with black pudding.

“I would totally recommend this! Missus had the brisket and was very impressed. Staff really friendly. Fantastic inside, must have cost a packet!

“Was given a book to look through by one of the staff about when they won the 'Four in a bed' program. Highly recommended and will be back.”

  1. The Boat Shed, Murray Street, Filey

The Northern Echo:

Being the probably the cheapest place to eat on this list, The Boat Shed offers great value for money and offers a range of dietary options.

Being the final recipient of a TripAdvisor Travellers Choice Award, The Boat Shed has received 217 “excellent” five-star reviews out of 235 reviews all together.

One person said: “The 5 of us thoroughly enjoyed a teatime meal at the boat shed.

“The children loved the pizza and the 1 year old absolutely devoured their garlic bread!

“They were very attentive and friendly towards the children- brilliant service. Thank you.”
