A MAN is getting ready to pedal his way through the region to show his support for the nurses who looked after his partner as she underwent treatment for ovarian cancer.

Darlington woman Steph Bowes was diagnosed with the cancer last December and has been undergoing treatment at James Cook University Hospital.

Lee Williams, her partner, is now planning a 190 mile cycle to raise money for OVA the Rainbow, a support group for women with ovarian cancer, which is run by South Tees Hospitals and was set up by two of the nurses involved in Steph's care.

He said: "They have been absolutely fantastic. If we felt unsure about anything or needed someone to talk to they were there. They have been brilliant to all of us. We can't praise them enough for what they have done.

"They don't get enough recognition."

The Northern Echo:

The 48-year-old will be riding with family members Philip Cowper, 51, and Gary Hynds, 53.

Nicknamed the three amigos, they are all members of Darlington Cycling Club and have been biking for about five or six years.

They will be setting off from Darlington at 5am on Saturday and expect to spend about 15 hours in the saddle as they ride to Sid's cafe, featured in the TV show Last of the Summer Wine, in Holmfirth, west Yorkshire, and back.

The team is being sponsored by inPipe Products, which is based in Bromptom, where Lee works.

The Northern Echo:

The ride will be their biggest to date. Lee added: "I'm excited, but nervous at the same time. It's going to be hard work."

Steph, 41, who has recently been able to return to her job at Saks, underwent a full hysterectomy in February. She is now in remission and is hoping not to need further treatment.

Lee added: "It's nice to see her getting back to how she used to be, though it will take a while."
