VOLUNTEERS have held an event to mark the 10th anniversary of a memorial garden.

Haughton Residents’ Association (HRA) created the space below St Andrew's Church, in Haughton, Darlington, to allow people to deposit the ashes of loved ones and have somewhere to remember them.

Over the last decade it has been maintained by volunteers, who are now looking for new members to help out.

HRA chairwoman Denise Parkin organised the event, which was attended by Darlington mayor councillor Cyndi Hughes and Baroness Jenny Chapman, who opened the garden when she was the town's MP.

Cllr Nick Wallis said: “After so much grief and heartache during Covid, Haughton Memorial Gardens are more important for the community than ever.

"It was so good for us all to come together again on Saturday and celebrate this special place. Time passes, however, and the volunteers really need some new blood to help maintain the gardens and plan for the future.”

To join the volunteers, call Ms Parkin on 07808 201697.
