THE A19 which was closed in both directions after a serious three-vehicle accident, has reopened.

The road was closed both ways due to accident investigation work from A684, Osmotherley to the A61, Thirsk, near Thimbleby on the outskirts of Northallerton.

The collision occurred at around 12.45am this morning (Wednesday), and involved a van and at least one car.

The Yorkshire Ambulance Service confirmed that two ambulances were sent to the scene and one person was taken to James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough for treatment.

A spokesman said: "We received an emergency call at 00.45 today (28 July) to reports of a road traffic collision on the A19 near Thimbleby on the outskirts of Northallerton.

"We dispatched two ambulances and a clinical supervisor to the scene and one patient was conveyed to James Cook University Hospital."

There was a diversion in place for several hours whilst emergency services worked at the scene.
