A TRIO of runners are taking part in this year's Darlington 10k after being inspired by a town councillor who is undergoing cancer treatment.

Andrew Anderson, James McGill and Ewan Wadd, all members of the Darlington Labour party, were inspired to enter the event by Red Hall and Lingfield councillor Hilary Lucas and are raising money for Brain Tumour UK.

Cllr Lucas, who is undergoing treatment following breast cancer, had a brain tumour 11 years ago. In May, she raised £1,700 by shaving her head before starting chemotherapy.

She is due to have her last round of chemotherapy.

Mr McGill said: "Hilary is a great friend, she’s always there when you need her and she does great work for the residents of Red Hall and Lingfied. Hilary has been an inspiration all the way through he latest treatment, we just want to do our bit to help out.

“I only started running regularly during lockdown, completing Couch to 5k in January. This will be my first event and I’m really looking forward to running with other people for the first time.”

Mr Anderson added: “For us this event isn’t about how quickly we finish, it’s about how much we raise for charity. I know the last year has been a struggle for a lot of people but any donation, big or small, is appreciated.”

Mr Wadd said: “The Labour Party is like a big family, we occasionally have disagreements, but we come together when we need to. I’m proud to be doing my bit for Hilary and her chosen charity.”
