Train services are returning to normal after delays caused by the death of a person on the tracks near Durham. 

A spokesperson for the service said: "British Transport Police were called to the line near Durham at 3.28pm today (Monday) following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

"Paramedics also attended, however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Officers are working to identify the deceased and inform their next of kin.

"This incident is not being treated as suspicious."

Cross Country has tweeted: "Services are now returning to normal between Darlington and Durham.

"If you were caught up in this disruption and arrived into your destination 30+ minutes late, you can claim delay repay compensation."

Earlier LNER alerted passengers through twitter.

LNER has arranged rail replacement coaches at Newcastle and Darlington station.
