THE fashion stakes were high as crowds flocked back to Newcastle Racecourse at the weekend.

Ladies Day is one of the high spots of the calendar at High Gosforth Park, giving racegoers the chance to put on the style and enjoy some top class action on the racecourse.

As Covid restrictions continue to ease the face coverings were cast aside and replaced by an array of fabulous fascinators and marvellous millinery.

The eight race card provided plenty of thrills and spills, with the bookies cursing as favourites romped home in the first three contests of the day.

Fittingly the final race was part of the Silk Series a handicap for professional and amateur female jockeys only.

Well established rider Hayley Turner took the the honours on Jebel Dukhan, a 2-1 second favourite, romping home almost five lengths clear of bookies' favourite Onesmoothoperator.

But the socialising continued off course, with the Pimms and other tipples of choice continuing to flow well into the evening.
