PUPILS at a North-East primary school staged their own min-Olympics by taking part in a Covid-safe sports day – along with their speedy parents.

Children at Croft Church of England Primary School, near Darlington, competed in their bubbles, with all track and field events taking place outside in the fresh air.

To keep everyone safe, the school adopted a one-way system, with equipment cleaned regularly, and up to 30 parents watched while staying socially distanced.

When it came to their turn, the parents’ race was won in impressive style by Daniel Hagan, with Terry Wrightson a gallant second, and Alex Wright a respectable third.

Head teacher Simon Robson said: “Families really appreciated the chance to come together in such a positive and healthy environment and parents commented that it ‘felt like normal’.

“It was fantastic for the children to have a live audience and to see them having such a lot of fun outdoors.”
