A FAMILY run pub and eatery named after much loved Grannie Annie is celebrating after winning a place in the finals of a prestigious national award.

Grannie Annie's Pub and Pantry on Roker Beach, Sunderland, has been named as one of three North East county winners of the National Pub & Bar Awards 2021

Formerly known as The Smugglers, the pub was taken over by Stephen Karezewski and is run his daughter Stacey and her partner Adam Straughan.

Stacey said: "It is fantastic. We didn't think for one second that by applying, we would win. It has been a really tough year so this is a real boost.

"The pub and pantry was taken over by my dad Stephen in 2017. It was called The Smugglers, but we named it after my Grannie Annie. My dad calls his mum Grannie Annie as well, it a bit of a joke in the family.

"So getting the award is so special for me, because it is part of the family as well."

She added: "We pride ourselves on customer service and we get a lot of regulars and dog walkers as well, because we are dog friendly.

"We do home made food and have a good selection of local ales. We use Maxim a lot and Cullercoats Brewery who donate money to the RNLI from every pint sold.

"We do live music on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays."

Stacey added: "Grannie Annie is obviously thrilled. She is so thrilled.

The other county winners were Northumberland's The Craster Arms and Newcastle's Leila Lily's.

All of the 94 county winners from throughout the UK will be invited to the National Pub & Bar Awards Grand Final, at 30 Euston Square, London, on the September 6.

On the evening, 15 regional winners and the overall National Pub & Bar of the Year will be announced.
