A PINT of ale arrived at a pub on Monday after a 355-mile journey – in time for the landlord and regulars to raise a toast to Freedom Day.

The pint of Ice Breaker Pale Ale had travelled for five days, starting from the Greene King Brewery in Bury St. Edmunds, after seven landlords from pubs across England came together in a joint effort to transport the pint of beer from one side of the country to the other to mark Freedom Day.

Each was charged with carrying the pint in the most creative way possible, with scooters, roller skates and even a tractor being utilised to get the drink to its final destination, The Waggon Team pub in Gateshead.

Rachel Jennings from the Norman Conquest in Middlesbrough chose to use a skateboard for the last leg to The Waggon Team.

However, a smooth journey was key, as Greene King had pledged to donate £1 to Macmillan for every millilitre of ale that arrived at each pub.

With 568 milliliters in a pint, this means there was a potential total donation of over £4,500 up for grabs.

The landlords were joined by members of the public, who helped to pass the pint of Greene King Ice Breaker Pale Ale between each destination.

During its journey, the well-travelled tipple stopped off at seven Greene King pubs and even paused for a ‘cheers’ with the Angel of the North.

General Manager of the Waggon Team, Ed Challans, used the pint to raise a synchronised toast to Freedom Day at 6pm yesterday across all of the participating pubs.

He said: “At the Waggon Team, both the team and our regulars felt we needed to mark Freedom Day, and the relaxing of regulations. As I spoke to other landlords at pubs across England, they also felt the same, which is where the inspiration for our Pass the Pint relay came from.

“The campaign has been a fun event for communities up and down the country to get involved in, and has raised money for charity along the way. We’re thrilled to have been chosen as the final destination to help mark this long-awaited day.”
