THREE businesses in some of Darlington's historic yards have applied for planning permission to improve their exteriors.

ELG Planning has prepared a statement for Darlington Borough Council on behalf of Yaeger Barbers at 79 Skinnergate; Cheese and Wine Shop in 8 Clark's Yard; and Acquaintance, at 10 Buckton's Yard.

Yaeger Barbers intends to put new signage above the door; existing doors to be repainted in traditional colours to match heritage of area; existing security shutters to be removed and associated electrical control switches and power to be removed; and a security grille proposed to flat door entrance.

Cheese and Wine Shop intends to add a new replacement external grade timber glazed screen with single glazed door; new themed externally fixed security grilles to front; add timber shutters to windows; new glazed timber framed window, paint-grade on west elevation; two new replacement projecting signage and frame on north elevation; and removal of cement in window opening at third floor and replace with “non vision” timber window.

Acquaintance intends to add new replacement external grade timber glazed screen & surround with single glazed door; timber 'fixed' shutters to windows; new timber glazed windows, paint-grade; new vinyl 'shop' graphics to render; re-painting of render; and introduction of barge board/fascia and finial.

The agent from ELG Planning said: "The works would demonstrably preserve and enhance the significance of the identified heritage assets, providing a number of clear public benefits."
