TWO victims of sexual assault have been praised after their evidence put a ‘bullying’ rapist behind bars.

Robert Jackson was jailed for ten years after being found guilty of the rape and false imprisonment of a woman, and sexual assault on a boy several years ago.

The 48-year-old, who is formerly of Darlington, is already serving a ten-year sentence for similar offences, which was imposed in 2018 – meaning he is now facing 20 years in prison.

In a victim impact statement read out at Teesside Crown Court, one of his victims said: “You took away my childhood and made it a misery. You filled it with anger, pain, sadness and nightmares that are with me every night – something that no child should have to go through.”

Judge Jonathan Carroll branded Jackson a 'sexual predator' who poses a significant risk to women and children when he sentenced him on Monday.

Investigative Officer Heidi Weir, from Darlington’s Safeguarding Team, led the investigation for Durham Police.

She said: “Jackson is an incredibly dangerous man who poses a high risk to both women and children.

“He has used them for his own sexual gratification with no regard whatsoever for their wellbeing or consideration for the enduring psychological trauma he has caused.

“They have shown immense courage in coming forward and facing their abuser, who forced them to relive their ordeal during a seven-day crown court trial.

“Jackson is a truly despicable man and I am pleased he has been brought to justice. I hope his victims can now begin to get on with the long process of rebuilding their lives, safe in the knowledge that he cannot harm them anymore.

“Finally, I would like to say to anyone who is suffering sexual abuse: you are not alone and there is hope.

“Come forward and speak to us – no matter who the perpetrator is, or when the abuse took place, our specially trained officers are here to help you.”
