HUNDREDS of pupils at a North-East school have celebrated the end of the academic year in a blaze of colour.

Hurworth School, near Darlington, staged a “Colourful Dash” – with youngsters having to run the gauntlet of staff throwing multi-coloured powder at them.

As well as providing end of year fun for the pupils after a challenging year, it was also a way of the school paying tribute to the NHS.

Rainbows have been used to display public appreciation for NHS heroes during the pandemic, as well as symbolizing support for diversity.

Beth Wright, head of geography and rewards co-ordinator, said: “We wanted to do something that celebrated how amazing the pupils have been in coping with what has been a really difficult year.

“At the same time as giving them some well-deserved fun, it enabled us to say thank you to the NHS workers for all they have done.”

With some pupils isolating due to Covid-19, around 400 pupils took part in the event, which was divided into year groups.

An ice cream van was on hand to help the pupils cool down after the dash, with some pupils given golden tickets to exchange for free treats as part of the reward scheme.
