THE North East is set to see more glorious weather today as another mini-heatwave is expected.

Following on from a spell of hot weather over the weekend, today is no exception as the temperature is set to soar in parts of the region.

Forecasters say weather conditions for the region as a whole are likely to remain mostly dry, sunny and very warm today as the mercury hits 27c in places.

It has also said more hot weather is likely on Wednesday, with the maximum temperature reaching the same heights.

It comes just a day after almost all lockdown restrictions were lifted on Monday, with all legal limits on social contact removed.

Popular destinations including beaches across the region saw people flock as they made the most of the soaring conditions.

What the Met Office has said

Marco Petagna, a Met Office forecaster, said an amber extreme heat warning had been issued to some parts of the country - but the North East was not included.

He said that nationally, some areas may see temperatures peak at around 32c as he explained where the intense period of heat is coming from.

He said: “Temperatures are likely to peak at around 32C (89.6F), even reaching 33C (91.4F) in isolated spots across southern England, so very warm for many.

“Even the more cooler areas will see temperatures in the twenties while other places could see some thundery showers.”

Mr Petagna put the warm weather down to an area of high pressure above the UK.

Warning over hot spell

He added: “I’d say people should stay out of the midday sun, apply sunscreen when outside, be wary of any health issues you may have and make sure to stay hydrated.

“As this heat remains in place, people will be vulnerable to dehydration, fatigue and nausea, so make sure to stay safe on public transport and if you are heading to the beach.”
