A POLICE investigation is underway and part of a town centre has been taped off following reports of a rape.

The attack in Consett was reported to police overnight and specialist officers from Durham police are said to be supporting a female.

The Northern Echo:

A spokesperson for Durham Constabulary said: "Officers received a report of a rape overnight.

"The incident is believed to have happened in Front Street, Consett, sometime between 11pm and 11.40pm.

"A female is being supported by specialist officers and the area has been cordoned off whilst enquiries continue."

A cordon has been set up in the Albert Road area of Consett and officers are currently at the scene, which is just over the road from an Aldi supermarket and next to Derwentside College.
