A LIBRARY is putting on a challenge to keep children reading during the holidays.

Those taking part in the challenge, which is being organised by Darlington Library, will have the chance to win prizes including a Nintendo Switch, Harry Potter Lego sets, A Fit Bit charge 4 watch, scooters, a family annual pass for Head of Steam museum, tickets to this year's pantomime at Darlington Hippodrome and bowling at the Dolphin Centre.

The Reading Rollercoaster challenge is free to enter and runs at libraries in Crown Street and Cockerton from July 10.

Children aged 0-16 years can take part by borrowing books and entering the draw.

It is aimed at prevent the "reading dip" often noticed by teachers on children's return to class.

Councillor Jon Clarke, Darlington Borough Council’s cabinet member for children and young people, said: “We know education and literacy skills have taken a dip recently due to coronavirus.

"Through our Reading Rollercoaster we have set children an enjoyable challenge aimed at boosting their reading skills and helping to encourage them to engage with reading once more.

"We hope by encouraging them to read and share books as a family, children are better prepared for the return to school and that younger children are given as much help as possible to develop their early language skills which have been affected by the use of face coverings and limited interactions outside the home during the pandemic.”
