MASTERS of gelato - the frozen Italian desert - are battling it out to be crowned the best in the world.

The UK final of the Gelato Festival World Masters will be held on July 6 at the Gelato Museum in Italy and a York artisan is in the running.

Roberto Culivicchi of Roberto Authentic Italian Gelato in York, is one of four UK gelato makers competing for two places in the world finals.

His lemon and basil flavour has been selected as one of the best in the country and Mr Culivicchi will compete against two London-based gelato makers and one from Lincolnshire in the national final.

The Northern Echo:

Gelato is the Italian word for ice cream but is lower in fat because it contains less cream and more milk, and is churned slower resulting in less air and a richer flavour

In order to be Covid-safe, the gelato artisans will send the mixes and ingredients for their flavour in special refrigerated shipments.

The instructors of Carpigiani Gelato University will then make the gelato under the supervision of the competitors, who will have a live video connection with the production area.

A judging panel will then decide who makes it to the world final in December.
