A CHARITY is working with a North-East fundraising legend ahead of this year’s Durham City Run Festival.

Colin Burgin-Plews, better known as Big Pink Dress, has agreed to take part in the Prince Bishops Durham City 5K and will make a special dress for the occasion.

He will lead a team of runners raising money for St Cuthbert’s Hospice at the 5K and 10K runs in Durham on Thursday July 15.

Colin said: “The last year or so has been incredibly hard for most people and charities.

“St Cuthbert’s Hospice does incredible and vital work and has suffered a hit to fundraising throughout lockdown.

“This year, I also lost my mother to cancer and when I found out about the hospice’s plans for the Durham City Run Festival, I needed to help in any way that I could.

“So, if you see me out and about with a bucket, please drop in whatever you can afford – it all helps.”

Organised by Events of the North, in partnership with Durham County Council and Durham University, the Durham City Run Festival will be held from July 15-17.

Over three days, the festival will bring running events to the heart of the city, including the Prince Bishops Durham City 5K and 10K, Run Like a Legend Mile, and Paula Radcliffe’s Families on Track.

The event coincides with the popular BRASS Festival, which runs July 14-18, a vibrant and colourful celebration of brass music in all its forms.

Hospice spokeswoman Sarah Donkin said: “Colin is a bit of a local legend and a fundraising icon for the many charities he has supported in the region.

“We’re so happy to have him join us on Team St Cuthbert’s this year in all his colourful glory.”

Like other charities, St Cuthbert’s Hospice has traditionally raised significant funds for its work through sports events like the Durham City Runs, but that has not been possible during the pandemic.

Money was donated to the hospice during the Virtual Durham City Run Festival last year, but July provides the first opportunity to fundraise for the charity at a major event for well over a year.

St Cuthbert’s already has a team of 25 runners lined up to participate in the festival, but is still recruiting fundraisers.

The hospice are offering runners the chance to take on the 5K or 10K route with free entry when they pledge to raise at least £100 in sponsorship.
