A DARLINGTON Turkish restaurant has announced it will permanently close following the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

Tiyatro, on Parkgate, will continue to serve customers until next month when it will close for good.

The news, announced on the Facebook page of the restaurant, was met with disappointment from customers and friends alike.

The restaurant won praise for its Turkish-style mezes and homemade bread, and continued to serve customers during lockdown through its delivery service.

However, continued uncertainty around the easing of the current lockdown restrictions has caused the owners to call time on service.

Owner Karin Dalbak said: "It is with great sadness for us all that I write this..we will be closing next month..we survived the year but with school holidays, nice weather for sitting outside and the general uncertainty we have not had the business we needed to keep going.

"All bookings will be honoured and done to our usual high standards if not better, and of course we will take further bookings till we close.

"It is a huge shame as we are different and I think the town needs different.

"Thank you to the people that have supported us throughout. Xx"

Elizabeth Hunter commented: "Sad news. Been here a few times and had takeout when it was closed. Best place in Darlington to eat. Wish Karin and all the team the best for whatever their future holds."

Another customer said: "Gutted to hear of this very sad decision you are having to make after all the hard work you’ve put in during lockdown…you are right, Darlington does need different and your food is fabulous."
