Police are investigating after a gruesome discovery in undergrowth near a school.

Officers say the person had been deceased for sometime before being found near a school off Greenland Road in Farnworth, Greater Manchester, yesterday just after noon.

It is not clear who found the body but police have ruled out suspicious circumstances surrounding the death and officers are trying to identify the person.

Residents reported police being on the scene throughout the day.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police told our sister title The Bolton News: "Police were called by NWAS shortly after 12.25pm on Friday 11 June to a report of a body found in undergrowth near a school off Greenland Road in Bolton.

Officers attended, and initial inquiries suggest the body may have been deceased for some time.

"There aren't believed to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the death, and officers are working towards identifying the person.

"Inquiries are ongoing."

Mount St Joseph and the science and technology centre are both near where the body was found.

Police have not said if the body was a man or a woman.
