THE majority of council areas across the region have reported a rise in Covid-19 infections in the past week as one area has seen a surge of 350 per cent.

Ten out of 14 local authorities across the North-East and North Yorkshire have reported a rise in the number of new cases in the last seven days.

Most up-to-date figures from Public Health England show that cases in Northumberland, South Tyneside, Newcastle and Hambleton have seen large increases.

Meanwhile areas including County Durham, Stockton and Gateshead have also seen their cases on the up.

The figures, which show the picture in the past seven days to June 4, compared with the previous seven days, come as the easing of more restrictions hang in the balance.

The Northern Echo:

The areas of yellow indicate parts with fewer than nine new Covid cases per 100,000 people, and green areas show areas with fewer than 49

The Government has said it is expected to make a decision on whether the last lockdown restrictions will be lifted on June 21.

There has been suggestion, and confirmation from the Health Secretary Matt Hancock, that it remains "open" to delaying the lifting of rules if the data suggests otherwise.

Currently, there are efforts underway to determine the impact of emerging variants and the rollout of the vaccination programme on Covid cases.

Despite more North East and North Yorkshire areas recording a rise, four council areas recorded a declining number of new infections.

Hartlepool and Darlington were among the areas to see the largest declines in new infections with cases down by 60 and 40 per cent respectively.

Meanwhile Redcar and Cleveland saw cases drop by 38.5 per cent and Middlesbrough saw cases plateau in the past week.

This is the latest situation where you are as these figures reveal how your local authority area compares across the board.
