IN response to your article (Echo, June 7) on Marc Scott’s 10,000 metre success in Birmingham at the weekend it is worth putting some more meat on the bones of this performance.

Marc was a member of Richmond and Zetland Harriers (RZH) as a junior athlete and was nurtured by both the club and his long-time coach, Ken Harker.

Ken, himself an accomplished athlete, was careful never to over extend Marc as a junior and it was this care and lack of injury that allowed him to develop as a senior when he moved to the US.

The English athletics club structure is unique around the world and RZH and Ken should be proud of the work they did with Marc to help him achieve his goals and become the successful athlete he has.
