It is alleged a verbal altercation took place between the drivers of a white van and motorcycle at around 2.10pm on May 19.
A statement from Darlington Police said the incident occurred on the carriageway between the A167 St Cuthberts Way and the roundabout at Northgate/North Road.
It added: "Both vehicles have then continued onto the A68 towards Bondgate when a verbal altercation has taken place between the respective driver and rider of the van and motorcycle when both vehicles have been stationary.
"It is believed a witness in a red vehicle has also intervened.
"If anyone has any information in relation to this incident please do not hesitate in contacting the police on 101 and ask to speak to PC 2606 Vardy of Darlington Neighbourhood Team. The crime reference number is CRI00334654."
