A PRIMARY school has raised almost £10,000 for charity in support of a poorly pupil described as 'a beacon of light' for everyone.

A charity walk was the latest fundraising initiative by South Kilvington C of E Primary School pupils who are supporting the Candlelighters charity in honour of classmate Amelia.

Brave Amelia sadly learned earlier this year that her leukaemia had returned for a second time, so pupils donned red clothing - her favourite colour - and completed a charity walk with the support of parents and villagers.

Headteacher Stephen Butterworth thanked everyone who supported the event, saying: "This would not have been possible without the fantastic support from the Friends of School team who marshalled the event, the Parish Team who provided refreshments and the support of families and local residents on the village green to clap the children in."

He added: "Amelia has shown tremendous amounts of courage and determination over recent weeks whilst she has been in and out of hospital receiving intensive treatment.

"Amelia's character, bravery and courage is an example to us all.

"She showed sheer determination to complete the walk with her friends as she set a swift pace at the front of the school.

"The whole staff team and children of South Kilvington are so proud of Amelia and how she has coped with the last few months.

"Amelia is our beacon of light and an example of what our fantastic school represents."

So far the small village school, which has just 95 pupils, has raised more than £9,000 for the Candlelighters charity that offers emotional, practical and financial support for families affected by childhood cancer in Yorkshire.
