The A19 in both directions is closed between the A179 and the A689 at Hartlepool due to a serious collision involving a diesel tanker.

Cleveland Police, Cleveland Fire Brigade and the North East Ambulance Service have all attended the incident.

One person has been taken to hospital.

Drivers are urged to take alternative routes as there is a clean up operation underway because of a major spillage due to the collision.

Highways England say the road is not expected to reopen until after 6pm today.

A Cleveland Police spokesperson said: "Emergency services are working together to clear the road as quickly as possible following an earlier collision involving three vehicles on the A19.

"The collision resulted in a large fuel spill on the A19 northbound and the road currently remains closed in both directions between the A689 and A179.

"One driver has suffered minor injuries, whilst the other two drivers have not been injured.

"We appreciate it’s frustrating for motorists to suffer delays and disruption, however, we are working together to ensure that the road is safe and we hope to be able to open lanes as soon as possible. Thank you for your understanding and co-operation."
