AN Indian takeaway has been given a top hygiene rating just weeks after inspectors slapped it with one-star and said it must make significant changes.

The Spice Junction takeaway on Hutton Street in Boldon was given a poor hygiene rating during an inspection on March 25, this year.

At the time, South Tyneside Council inspectors deemed that the business must make "major" improvements to the premises following the handing of the poor rating.

Across the UK, every food outlet including convenience stores, restaurants, hospitals and care homes are given a hygiene rating.

The ratings are based on three key areas - hygiene and safety, structural compliance and confidence in management/management of food safety.

In the inspection of Spice Junction back in March, the business was told its hygienic food handling, which includes how food is prepared, cooked, re-heated and stored, was "generally satisfactory."

Meanwhile the cleanliness and condition of facilities and building, which includes ventilation, hand washing facilities and pest control, was deemed "good."

But the inspection hit the stumbling blocks when it came to management of food safety, when inspectors said there was "major improvement necessary."

This includes the probing of what system or checks are in place to ensure that food served is safe to eat, and that staff know about food safety.

But following a re-inspection on May 6, the business was re-rated and given a five-star food hygiene rating.

The score, which means a business is "very good" in its handling of food and safety, is the highest a business can be given.

Spice Junction was approached for comment.
