WE received several calls from people unable to precisely locate the picture on the front of the Memories supplement in The Northern Echo a fortnight ago (below).

The front cover picture from a fortnight ago showing Northgate looking north in August 1962

It showed Northgate in Darlington on July 27, 1962. The photographer seems to have been upstairs in the shop, currently empty, on the corner of Crown Street, looking north towards Edward Pease’s house. The spire in the distance belongs to St George’s Presbyterian Church.

The picture is confusing because the inner ring road has yet to blast its way through, and clear all the buildings on the left and create a large roundabout.

On the right are the white 1930s-style department stores of British Home Stores, Marks & Spencer and Burtons the tailor.

On the far left is the entrance to Union Street, which is now the alleyway next to the Halifax building society. There are another four retail units before we come to Albion Street which has the Prudential Building Society’s office on the corner. This striking office was built in 1911 and had a statue of Prudentia over the door. We last saw the statue in a packing case in the council’s yard.

The furniture store belonged to John Peters, which was very close to George Zissler’s shop.

The Technical College is far right. These buildings were all demolished for the inner ring road and Northgate House

After Zissler’s shop came the Burns pub, which was on the corner of Kendrew Street. Over Kendrew Street was the Gaumont cinema before we reach Gladstone Street and the Technical College.
