POLICE were called to an ongoing incident near a primary school this morning where men were fighting with weapons.

The incident occurred near to Berwick Hills Primary School this morning (Friday), at around 8.40am where a number of men were fighting with weapons.

The incident spilled into the school grounds and the school took safety precautions.

Armed officers attended the scene and a number of men were located in possession of sharp objects.

Four men were arrested and taken into police custody.

Two members of the public attempted to intervene, to assist police in detaining the suspects.

One of these men suffered minor injuries and was transported to hospital, where he was later treated and released.

Two other members of the public also reported a man attempting to steal their vehicles outside the school, but he was unsuccessful.

The incident near to the school is believed to be linked to an earlier incident at around 6.40am this morning, where an aggravated burglary took place at a property on Ellerby Green.

A Vauxhall Insignia and a motorbike were stolen in the incident, where four males attended the address and threatened the occupants with a weapon.

A total of six arrests have now been made in connection with the incidents, of men aged 22, 26, 26, 27, 28, and 49.

These men remain in police custody at this time.

Officers are again reassuring parents that the incident was not linked to the school and neighbourhood officers have remained at the school today with the children and staff, to reassure them and provide a high-visibility presence.
