Saved By a Stranger (BBC2, 9pm)

Marc, a public-health worker, was diagnosed with HIV aged just 17 in the late 1980s. Struggling to cope, he found support at the Landmark Centre in Brixton, where he had regular counselling sessions with a volunteer called John. Nearly 30 years later, Marc is desperate to find and thank John for helping him through his darkest hour. We also hear from Peter, who was a young father of three children living in Belfast in 1979 when he was shot in his own home. He spent almost a year recovering at Musgrave Park Hospital, where a rehabilitation nurse called Betsy would sit by his side, mop his brow and chat with him. Today Peter is searching for his ‘angel’ Betsy, whose kindness and care he has never forgotten.

Ian Wright: Home Truths (BBC1, 9pm)

When Ian Wright took part in Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs in February 2020, listeners learned a lot about the former footballer and pundit. We discovered how a teacher at Turnham Primary School, Mr Pigden, changed Ian’s life, before he left school at 14 and became a plasterer, and spent 18 days in prison in 1982. However, most moving of all was Ian describing witnessing abuse as a child and how he grew up terrified of his stepfather. The outpouring of support Ian received after the broadcast had a huge impact on him and was the catalyst for this film. Ian meets with social workers to find out how they are supporting and protecting children living in at-risk households during Covid-19 as well as meeting with adults and young people who have been affected by growing up with domestic abuse.

And quite what Mike Wozniak is up to is anyone’s guess. As usual, Little Alex Horne watches it all unfold and makes neat notes for the Taskmaster.
