A WOMAN who attacked her former partner with a screwdriver after breaking into his home narrowly avoided being sent to prison.

Carolyn Jones was saved from custody after her victim pleaded with the judge to keep her out of prison after spending six months on remand.

The 58-year-old, who now suffers from a number of medical conditions, let herself into the victim's Saltburn home before launching her violent attack on him.

Chris Baker, prosecuting, read out the victim's personal impact statement, he wrote: "I do not want her to go to jail, I believe a custodial sentence will do nobody any good at all.

"If she was to walk out of court today I would be chuffed."

Jones, of Marine Parade, Saltburn, pleaded guilty to aggravated burglary and breaching a restraining order following the events of July 2019.

Martin Towers, in mitigation, said his client had suffered a number of medical problems since the offence was committed.

He said: "This is not a typical aggravated burglary, far from it, and this is not a typical defendant."

Judge Jonathan Carroll sentenced Jones to 12 months in prison, suspended for two years and ordered her to attend 25 rehabilitation activity requirement days.

"You have significant physical and psychological difficulties," he said. "You came into court completely dependent on your walking device to give you stability while you walk."
