Great British Menu (BBC2, 8pm)

Andi Oliver presents the Scottish heats as last year’s regional winner, Roberta Hall, returns to take on Stuart Ralson, Scott Smith and Amy Elles. This year’s theme is invention and innovation, and the chefs have definitely taken that to heart with a crispy shredded beef and Lanark blue cheese starter presented in a giant petri dish to celebrate Alexander Fleming’s invention of antibiotics, and two other dishes inspired by what is being euphemistically described as ‘family planning’. The fish courses include a lobster concoction that pays homage to Scottish scientific pioneer Mary Sommerville, and her work in the field of astronomy, but despite their dedication to the theme, the episode will end in one chef being sent home by the veteran judge.

Having given up on cleaning, and clinging to memories of her glamorous past as an amateur singer, Charmaine’s only company now is her pet chihuahuas. The pet pooches have been with her through thick and thin, but they are part of the problem.
