A FORMER Marks & Spencer has gone on the market for more than £1m as pictures reveal just how large the department store was.

The former store on Redcar's High Street closed for good in 2014 after almost eight decades serving as an iconic destination in the town.

At the time, the branch which had been transformed into an 'Outlet' store several years prior, saw almost 50 staff members made redundant, or offered jobs elsewhere.

But again going up for auction, six years after its closure the store is being described as an "investment" opportunity.

With a guide price of £1,290,000, Just-Sold.co.uk are hoping its ground floor and first floor will attract developers to build multiple retail units.

Bidding for the entire unit is expected to start at £1,190,000, with the auction ending on Monday, March 29.

A spokesperson said: "A unique opportunity to purchase a huge freehold commercial premises having the advantage of access from two streets in Redcar.

"The property is arranged on the ground and first floors to provide a large multiple retail units on the ground floor with access from two streets.

"The store has the benefit of a rear frontage to The Esplanade overlooking the seafront. It has access from two sides."
