A TEENAGE boy died after the motorbike he was riding crashed into a tree, police have confirmed.

A large number of emergency services were called to reports that a young motorcyclist had been involved in a collision in woodland in the Eston Hills at Lazenby, near Middlesbrough, on Sunday afternoon.

Crews from Cleveland Police, North East Ambulance Service, Cleveland Fire Brigade and Cleveland Mountain Rescue Team were all scrambled to the scene at about 2.30pm.

It is understood the Great North Air Ambulance Service also attended but firefighters and mountain rescue volunteers were able to help treat the boy at the scene before carrying him in a stretcher to a land ambulance for transportation to hospital.

He was then taken to Middlesbrough's James Cook University Hospital where he later passed away.

A spokeswoman for Cleveland Police said officers were called to the scene of the incident by ambulance service colleagues around 2.40pm on Sunday.

She said: "It was reported that the boy was riding a motorbike, when it collided with a tree.

"Emergency services attended the scene and the boy was taken to James Cook University Hospital with serious injuries, where he sadly later died.

"Our thoughts remain with the boy’s family and friends at this extremely difficult time."

Any witnesses who have not already spoken with police are asked to contact Cleveland Police on 101, quoting incident number 044106.
