RISHI Sunak MP took questions from almost 30 Leyburn pupils during a visit to the town’s highly-rated school.

Mr Sunak, MP for Richmond, called in at Leyburn Primary at the end of the first week of all its pupils being back in the classroom.

During the half-hour Q&A with the Year 6 pupils, Mr Sunak fielded questions on a huge range of subjects about his life in Westminster as their local representative, his role as Chancellor, what it was like working closely with the Prime Minister and how he came to be a MP.

He said: “The pupils had some great questions for me and it was clear to see they were enjoying being back at school once more with their friends and teachers.”

Headteacher Sarah Beveridge said the school was very grateful that Mr Sunak had found the time to visit at the end of the school’s first full week back.

She said the pupils had been excited for the visit and were very keen to take up Mr Sunak’s invitation to come to Westminster to visit him in Parliament when Covid-19 restrictions are lifted and allow travel.

“It was a big week for us after what has been a challenging time for every school across the country so it was wonderful Mr Sunak could spare the time to spend with our children.

“They were absolutely buzzing after the visit, she added.

Earlier in the day, Mr Sunak had visited the town’s secondary school, The Wensleydale School, to see the Covid-19 testing procedures put in place for the safe return of pupils and staff.
