THIS week, we’ve peered into The Northern Echo archive and found a packet of pictures marked “Bishop Auckland R”. R stands for roads, railways, restaurants and robberies – so a pretty broad category, really.

As ever, if any of these pictures trigger any memories, or if you have any information about any aspect of them, please get in touch. Email

Last week’s collection of pictures showing the construction of the A1 around Darlington in the 1960s drew a great response, particularly our mystery bridge at Coatham Mundeville, which we’ll have to investigate for next week.

As ever, many thanks indeed for all your correspondence. There is, also as ever, a huge backlog, but we will get to it all – eventually.
