A MAN was taken to hospital with significant injuries last night following a crash on the A19.

The crash involved two vehicles with one car being flipped on its roof.

It took place on the southbound carriageway immediately south of the Easington services at around 7.20pm.

A Volkswagen Golf and a Ford S-Max collided with each other and street furniture, resulting in significant damage to both vehicles.

The Volkswagen driver – a 29-year-old man – sustained serious injuries and was treated at James Cook University Hospital.

The driver and passenger of the Ford – a 22-year-old man and a 20-year-old man – sustained minor injuries.

Officers are urging anyone who witnessed the collision, or who may have seen the vehicles prior to the incident, to contact Durham Police on 101, quoting reference number 340 of March 4.

A spokesperson from Highways England said: "The A19 is closed southbound between the A182 (near Murton) and A1086 (near Easington), due to a serious collision involving 2 vehicles. One of the vehicles has overturned and come to rest on its roof."

"All emergency services are in attendance along with Highways England Traffic Officers.

"Collision investigation work will be carried out. Once complete, vehicle recovery and collision clear-up work can begin. The closure is expected to be in place for several hours."
