AS February is host to an annual observation of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender history, a university has ensured that despite lockdown and social-distancing guidelines, the recognition and acknowledgement of LGBT+ history still continues.

Although the pandemic has meant activities have been considerably different this year, Teesside University felt it was still an important time to reflect on the history of gay rights and the related civil rights movements.

Here Juliet Amos, Executive Director of Human Resources at Teesside University and the university’s Executive LGBT+ Champion, explains some of the initiatives which help to make Teesside an inclusive and supportive university, as well as her hopes to bring Pride to the Tees Valley region.

She said: “At Teesside we truly value the rich diversity of our university community and work hard to provide an inclusive environment where everybody can be their genuine self.

“Our LGBT+ Focus Group is an important staff and student network of role models and allies, linked by a common goal to promote and celebrate equality and diversity across our organisation and within the communities we serve.

“We meet throughout the year to discuss policy, promote engagement initiatives, support key calendar events and champion equality and diversity for all.

“We have organised a range of talks from charities and support groups, held our annual ‘Rainbow Rounders’ tournament, staged various LGBT+ film screenings, premieres and art installations and, of course, supported Pride amongst other key LGBT+ events throughout the year.

“As part of Transgender Day of Remembrance we have continued to raise awareness and organise activities and have planted memorial trees to remember those who have died as a result of violence due to their gender identity and we are always striving to do more.

“Teesside University is an anchor institution within the Tees Valley and we recognise the significant role our institution, our staff and our graduates play in the cultural agenda across the region.

“We are proud to be ranked 40th in the Stonewall UK Workplace Equality Index Top 100 Employers, showcasing our commitment to being a top employer for LGBT+ staff.

Our LGBT+ Focus Group is committed to raising awareness of LGBT+ issues within the region. One of our overarching ambitions is to support and grow a Pride event which can return successfully to the Tees Valley. Last year, we were thrilled to begin working with partners and businesses across the region to develop plans for this important event with the University as a key contributor.

"The obvious effect of the Covid-19 pandemic sadly halted our plans over the last year.

"However, reflecting upon this LGBT+ History Month and the thoughts of life returning to a form of normality has once again ignited our passion to explore just what Pride could look like if it were to return to Teesside.

"Ideas are currently being discussed and we’re keen to collaborate with partners and organisations who share in our vision.

"The global pandemic has reminded us all just how important it is that society supports one another.

The events of the last year, whilst ensuring we remained physically distant, have allowed us to pause for thought - recognising that messages of equality, inclusion and a caring society are more important than ever.”
