THE North-East was impressed by the arrival of the enormous P&O Cruises Azura earlier this year - but there's many more set to arrive in the next few months.

The Port of Tyne routinely publishes a list of cruise ships that are due to arrive at its North Shields Cruise Ship Terminal.

From the sister ship to the ill-fated Costa Concordia, the Costa Favolosa to the mega german-cruise liner, the AIDASOL, there are scores of ships set to arrive this year.

The Port of Tyne has said that the list is subject to change due to the ongoing Covid pandemic, but it is understood many voyages are still scheduled.

Long before Covid took grip of the tourism industry, in 2019, the terminal welcomed 59 cruise ships over a twelve-month period, up a staggering 51 from the year before.

At the time, port bosses said it marked exactly 20 years since the arrival of the first cruise ship into the North-East in 1999.

Before the cruise ship boom, the Port of Tyne heavily relied on DFDS, FjordLine and cargo transport between the region and the rest of the globe.
