THE father of missing woman Claudia Lawrence has died at the age of 74.

Peter Lawrence died on Thursday at St Leonard’s Hospice, York, following a short illness.

The retired solicitor, who was awarded an OBE in 2018, had helped make several changes to the law, including changes to the Presumption of Death Act and then the creation of the new Guardianship (Missing Persons) Act, known as Claudia’s Law, to assist people in dealing with the financial and business affairs of a missing person.

Martin Dales, friend and spokesman, said he would be “sorely missed”.

He added: “It is sad that nearly 12 years after Claudia’s disappearance from York Peter never found out what has happened to her.

“He was a very private person thrust into the full glare of the media and despite a tireless campaign to find her, he also selflessly devoted himself to helping others with missing relatives through the charity Missing People.”

He added: “Despite Peter’s death, the message remains the same - where is Claudia? Anyone with information should contact North Yorkshire Police on 101.”

Originally from Lancashire, Mr Lawrence grew up in Darlington from the age of seven and went to grammar school in the town.

He met Joan through the church and the pair married at All Saint’s Church, Ravensworth, in 1970. First daughter Ali was born in Greenbank Maternity Hospital, Darlington, in 1971, with Claudia following in 1974.

He moved to North Yorkshire in 1972 and was a parter at Malton-based Ware & Kay for 30 years, before becoming a sole practioner.

Claudia, who was a chef in York, disappeared on her way to work in March 2009. Police believe the 35-year-old was murdered but her body has never been found.
