THE areas with the highest and lowest reported coronavirus cases across the North-East have been revealed - with one seeing cases four times the region's average.

Analysis of latest Public Health England data by The Northern Echo has identified the postcode areas that have seen the biggest rise and fall in cases in the past week.

The data, which shows how many cases each area saw in the week leading to February 6, compared with the previous week, shows one Teesside area seeing the most cases.

The ward of Middlesbrough Central has seen 65 confirmed cases in the past week, quadruple the region's current average of 16 cases per ward.

This is closely followed by the Central Stockton and Portrack wards, which reported 61 new cases.

But the data available, which covers 352 wards across all 14 local authority areas in the North-East and North Yorkshire, shows where cases have seen large decreases.

The wards of Sedgefield & Bishop Middleham, Upper Teesdale, Simonside and Walker South, have all seen the fewest reported three cases with just three each.

The updated 'R rate' for the North-East and Yorkshire is now between 0.8 and 0.9, which is slightly above the latest R number range for the UK of 0.7 and 0.9.

The current growth rate in the region including Yorkshire, is set at -4 to -1, meaning that the number of new infections is falling between four per cent to one per cent every day.
