A RAPE crisis centre is launching a campaign amid fears it is facing an explosion of referrals this year when lockdowns come to an end.

Darlington and County Durham's Rape and Sexual Abuse Counselling Centre (RSACC) is hoping to reach as many people as possible – including people who may not be aware of its services – and is running a radio campaign for the first time.

The charity is anticipating a rise in people getting in touch when lockdowns end, from women who have been affected by sexual violence both during the pandemic and in the past.

While it has a six month waiting list for its counselling services, it also operates a helpline where people can access support and practical assistance.

Isabel Owens, deputy chief executive of RSACC, said: "What we are expecting to see is a really significant increase in people coming forward in the coming year as restrictions ease, from people who have experienced sexual violence during the lockdown or because of lockdown have had a period of reflection.

"We are much more isolated at the moment and some people may now feel like they are ready to seek support.

"During lockdown many women will have to prioritise other needs. If they have children at home they might not be able to prioritise themselves."

The radio campaign will be aired on Sun FM and Durham and Darlington FM from Monday, February 15.

It has been funded by the Durham Police, Crime and Victims’ Commissioner.

Acting commissioner Steve White said, “We are extremely grateful that the RSACC has continued to deliver support to some of the most vulnerable members in our community during the pandemic.

“I am delighted to be able to offer financial assistance to assist them through these very trying times so they can promote their services through more channels.

“Getting the message out to victims that support is still available is vital and the helpline provides that crucial lifeline to victims who are seeking emotional and practical support."

  • The helpline – 0300 222 5730 – is open Monday – Thursday 10am-2pm and Tuesday and Thursday 6.30pm-9pm. It is anonymous and confidential and available to any survivor who has been directly or indirectly affected by sexual violence or domestic abuse.
