RESIDENTS have called for a permanent 20mph speed limit on a neighbourhood street after a car flipped onto its roof – just a day after warning signs went up.

People living in the Margery Lane area of Durham, have appealed for action, saying the route has become busier and more dangerous since the closure of the city's New Elvet Bridge.

Resident Denis Fox said: "I have written to Durham County Council, telling them there was an accident waiting to happen.

"On Friday morning, a car flipped onto its roof after a collision. Thankfully, the driver was not seriously hurt.

"Only the previous day council workers had started putting up signs near our house, which will flash to warn drivers to slow to 20mph when children are walking to school.

"We are calling for a 20mph restriction on the road to be made permanent, from Crossgate to the the busgate at Quarryheads Lane.

"The sign should be put at the traffic lights at the Crossgate junction to make motorists aware, becausemany of them just put their foot down thinking they are leaving the city.

"A significant number of drivers are travelling too fast along this narrow road."

Durham Police confirmed they had attended an incident in the Margery Lane area at about 8.30am on Friday, involving a woman in her 30s.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said a crew treated one female patient with minor injuries at the scene.

Brian Buckley, Durham County Council’s strategic highways manager, said: “We will be investigating the cause of this incident and see if any action needs to be taken.”
