THESE are some of the region's homes where you only need £5,000 or less to get on the property ladder.

A mix of two and three-bedroom homes across the North-East are currently on the market for less than £50,000 - and some are ready to move straight into.

Marketed towards first-time buyers, these homes are among the cheapest in the region listed on the property website, Zoopla.

They also require a much smaller deposit, with the standard ten per cent usually required to secure a mortgage equalling less than £5,000.

In fact, some lenders offer first time buyers deposits at five per cent, meaning the money needed upfront is slashed even further.

According to Zoopla, there are currently around 375 different deals for those wanting to put down just five per cent on their first home, compared to deals available in 2008.

Although it warns you are likely to pay significantly higher amounts of interest because you are lending more.

It also says you are more likely to be accepted for a mortgage when putting more of a deposit down as you are seen as less of a risk.

Tom Parker, Consumer Spokesperson at Zoopla, said: “The North-East offers home buyers some of the best value for money across the whole country, with it being possible to purchase a modern spacious property including a decent garden for a £5,000 deposit.

"This helps explain why the region is favoured by buy to let investors with locations like Sunderland, County Durham and Hartlepool all proving popular.”
