PICTURES have revealed how a major transformation at Teesside Airport is well underway - and some areas are already nearing completion.

Exclusive pictures show how the terminal building is being redeveloped to include a number of brand new facilities ahead of its reopening.

Dated check-in desks have been pictured ripped out, while false walls that have divided disused parts of the building for several years have been pulled down.

The sneak peak has also revealed a brand new retail and duty free unit, while pictures show the ongoing work to create a dedicated departure gate for Ryanair.

As part of the project, the security hall is being completely overhauled, the business lounge is being remodelled and a second family lounge is being created.

A restaurant, cocktail bar and coffee shop is also set to be added once the major works are finished.

The multi-million pound transformation, which is understood to be the first in more than 15 years, is expected to completed by April 2021.

Part of the airport's ten-year plan, the transformation is part of the masterplan to bring the airport "back into profit."

Speaking to The Northern Echo about the refurbishment in December, the Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said: “We’ve got the flights now, and now we need to increase revenue in the airport, we need to break even, we need to move back into profit and these new offerings will help us do that."
