TRIBUTES have been paid to a "dedicated" and "truly brilliant" teacher following his death from Covid-19.

Paul Hilditch, 55, who was a teacher at Conyers School, in Yarm, died on Sunday, December 27.

He had been in hospital for two weeks battling with the coronavirus.

Parents and pupils have turned to social media to pay tribute to the popular teacher, who had taught engineering and technology at the school for four years.

Headteacher Louise Spellman described Mr Hilditch as a "true inspiration" who had a powerful impact on pupils.

She said: "We are deeply saddened at the sudden loss of Paul, our much loved friend and colleague.

"Paul taught engineering and technology at Conyers for four years and has been a truly dedicated, caring and well-loved member of staff.

“Paul was a fantastic teacher who thought so much of his students and really gave his all to ensure they achieved their best.

"He was a true inspiration to many and, for our students, he worked tirelessly to ensure their success.

"His passion for electronics in particular has had a powerful impact on our students, many of whom have gone on to successful careers in engineering.

"Paul loved our school and our students: he will be remembered as a kind, devoted and truly brilliant teacher.

“All of our thoughts and prayers are with Paul’s friends and family at this time.”

Ms Spellman said services would be on hand to support students and staff and a book of condolence was being set up which would be shared with Mr Hilditch's family.

Mr Hilditch was a founding member and events coordinator for the Northern World War 2 Association (Nww2A).

A spokesperson for the committee said: "He will be greatly missed.

"The committee and the whole of the Nww2A would like to express our great sadness at his passing and extend our condolences to his family and friends."
