THERE have been more than 2,400 further positive coronavirus tests in the North-East and North Yorkshire.

The Government said there were a further 50,023 cases across the country, bringing the number recorded in seven days to 283,337.

And a further 981 people died within 28 days of a positive test.

A further 494 people who tested positive for coronavirus have died in hospital in England, bringing the total number of confirmed deaths reported in hospitals to 49,719, NHS England said today.

Patients were aged between 30 and 100. All except 20, aged between 36 and 92, had known underlying health conditions.

The deaths were between November 9 and December 29.

There were 23 other deaths reported with no positive Covid-19 test result.

A further 32 deaths were reported today at hospitals in the North-East and North Yorkshire.

There were five further deaths at County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust, five at North Tees and Hartlepool, eight at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, one at South Tees Hospitals, eight at South Tyneside and Sunderland, one at Newcastle Hospitals and four at York Teaching Hospitals.

The deaths happened between December 26-29.

North Yorkshire – 17,172 was 16,854– an increase of 318

York – 7,039 was 6,890– an increase of 149

Newcastle – 17,550 was 17,439– an increase of 111

North Tyneside – 8,149 was 8,040 – an increase of 109

South Tyneside – 7,560 was 7,394– an increase of 166

Sunderland – 13,325 was 13,044– an increase of 281

Northumberland – 11,127 was 10,942– an increase of 185

Gateshead – 9,238 was 9,088– an increase of 150
