A SERIOUS crash has closed the A66 westbound between Scotch Corner and the A67 near Bowes.
Emergency services are still at the scene and motorists are being diverted locally by continuing on the A1(M) to J58 and then taking the A68 for approximately seven miles.
A Highways England spokesman said: "Delays are likely on the approach to the closure, with additional journey times also expected on diversion routes.
"Please allow extra time for your journey if travelling in the area or consider alternative routes."
The AA reports that traffic is backed up in the area and motorists should avoid the route if possible.
